Jobs on Guernsey Island. Work permit, travel visa
After 1 January 2021, with the entry into force of Brexit, freedom of movement will cease: all EU citizens traveling for purposes other than tourism will need a visa to reach Guernsey Island. In addition to the visa, those who come to work will also need the Population Management document.
The island of Guernsey is a territory with special status of Great Britain, located in the English Channel, between England and France. It is not part of either the UK or the European Union, but until Brexit it had the same status, as if it were a party.
From 1 January 2021 there will be new travel and work rules in Guernsey. Here are the most important things you need to know.
Travel documents
If you are an EU citizen and have received a residence or pre-residence permit, you can travel with your identity card or passport until December 31, 2025.
If you do not have a residence or pre-stay permit and you want to get to Guernsey to work, from 1 January 2021 you will only be able to travel on the basis of your passport.
As a tourist, until October 1, 2021 you will be able to travel based on your identity card or passport; after this date, only on the basis of the passport.
How to get a visa
The most important change from 1 January 2021 is that EU citizens coming to work on the island of Guernsey must apply for a visa before traveling. The application can be made after the person has received the permit from the Population Management.
So both the work permit and the visa must be obtained before traveling to Guernsey.
The visa application is made on the portal of the British Government and includes a fee whose value depends on the duration of the permit from the Population Management:
- £ 244 for a short-term permit (maximum 12 months); for this type of permit apply here: https://www.gov.uk/seasonal-worker-visa/apply
- £ 610 for long-term leave (more than 12 months); for this type of permit apply here: https://visas-immigration.service.gov.uk/other-ooc
Those who obtain work permits for more than 12 months can be accompanied by a wife / partner and a child (under 18); they will have to apply for the visa separately.
How to obtain a permit from Population Management
To be able to work in Guernsey, you must obtain a permit from Population Management before applying for a visa.
The permit is obtained by applying on the portal: https://gov.gg/populationmanagement
