Information about NINO

NINO – National Insurance Number

The insurance number is a unique identification number that centralizes the social contributions paid in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, being necessary for self-employed persons / workers, as well as for persons requesting social security contributions. or non-contributory in this state.

It is issued by the public employment service Jobcentre Plus within the Department for Work and Pensions.

It is attributed for life and is not transmissible, does not expire and costs nothing!

We set up an appointment at the nearest Jobcentre in order to obtain NINo, as soon as you reach the employer and it will be in about 2-3 weeks. You will receive a letter in a few days confirming the date of the interview and specifying what documents you must present at the interview.

In order to obtain NINO, you must present certain documents:

  • documents proving identity (passport / ID or driver’s license or birth / adoption / marriage certificates)
  • documents certifying the development of employment relationships (employment offer or employment contract)
  • proof of address (rental contract and letter for taking space, utility bills).

This appointment is obtained by calling the phone number 0845 600 0643 between 8 am-6pm.

At the Jobcenter office you must present either the letter you received or the reference number (which we will send you obtained after the telephone call) and it would be good to arrive at least 15 minutes early, to turn off your cell phone.

The interview consists of some questions about citizenship, date of coming to the UK, reasons for requesting NINo and will eventually help you fill out a form required for the application, then submit the required documents (only original documents are accepted, not children, accompanied by legalized translations where applicable). It takes about 5-10 minutes. At the end of the interview, your letter is returned and your passport is checked for verification (it takes about 10-15 minutes) and a paper confirming that you have applied for NINo, with a provisional number.

After the interview, if the application is successful, you will receive the NINo number by mail in about 3-4 weeks; if it is not successful, you will also receive by mail a letter informing you that the application has been rejected, as well as the reasons for rejection.
